Sophia Hof

College Choice: Loyola New Orleans
College Major: Political Science

Being a member of and President of the Choir, Vice President of the Student Council, a Student Council representative during all four years of high school, as well as her academics and work on Mock Trial and performing on stage, have kept Sophia Hof very busy.

She has been offered the Millsaps Presidential scholarship, the Loyola NOLA Provost Scholarship, The Hendrix College Scholarship at Hendrix College, the Light! More Light! Scholarship + The Lawrentian Award at Lawrence University, the Colonel Scholarship at Centre College, the Ecce Quam Bonum Scholarship at Sewanee, and the Dean’s Scholarship at Indiana University. Her other acceptance is Purdue.

Sophia had this to say about her experience here. “Though McGehee is very small, I feel confident when I say that my voice is always amplified in my classes. From a young age, teachers have encouraged me to not be afraid to insert myself into class by asking questions, offering opinions, and discussing material with my peers. While at McGehee, I have gained confidence in not only my voice, but the idea that my perspective matters and deserves to be expressed. Another extension of the encouragement to ask questions is my close relationship with teachers. I have never been afraid to reach out to a teacher for extra help because McGehee's faculty have made it a place where students feel comfortable enough to make mistakes and be vulnerable knowing that their mentors only want to see them excel. I think this is helped by McGehee's small student to teacher ratio because teachers understand us sometimes better than I think we understand ourselves.”

When asked about her favorite McGehee memory, it is not a surprise that it involves music. She commented, “Singing on the stairs is my favorite McGehee memory. There is nothing as fun or intimate as being able to sing with your classmates and favorite underclassmen on the staircase. It is such a fun and beautiful way to unite all different kinds of people and we always have fun because we are able to enjoy all that we have accomplished and just be with each other making something special not only for the school but for each other.”
