Kay Tober

College Choice: Tulane University
College Major: Architecture

This senior’s burgeoning resume includes some of everything! From academic honors and leadership positions, to choir, theater, Mélange Editor-in-Chief, Mock Trial and much more, Kay Tober is a McGehee girl who is passionate about her talents and academics, as well as in making a difference. She writes, “McGehee has helped transform me into an advocate for myself and others. As a kid, I was pretty quiet and mild tempered, but through my high-school career I think I've grown into more of a leader than a bystander. Through my classmates and the faculty, I've been encouraged to make the difference I want to see in the world, and at McGehee, I actually believe I can make a difference. McGehee has encouraged me to pursue what I'm passionate about and not stand down when other people tell me 'no.'”

She pays special tribute to faculty member Frannie Buchtel, writing, “Ms. Buchtel has been there at every step of my journey at McGehee. From my first step in the spotlight in second grade as Toulouse in the Aristocats, to eighth grade as my advisor, to my final year on McGehee's stage as Jean Valjean in Les Miserables, she's always been a mentor to me. In and out of class, she helped me grow in so many ways as a person and as a student. Although she wasn't a core curricular teacher, who we see 24/7 during a regular school week, she had always been a part of my life and my experience at McGehee. Taking her class senior year, along with the Upper School Musical, was definitely a fun way to end my time at McGehee.”

Named a Citizenship Girl in 11th grade, Kay has certainly “given her best to McGehee, and to her the School gives its highest honor.”

Kay’s favorite tradition is big sis, l’il sis, remarking, “it allows the upperclassmen to bond and learn more about the underclassmen. Of course, there are other ways to bond, like through the school play or sports, but this tradition definitely helps.”

She received full tuition scholarships from Tulane, Syracuse and ULL, and ultimately chose Tulane after receiving the Paul Tulane Award which covers full tuition for five years as an architecture student.
