Helen Street

College Choice: University of St. Andrews in Scotland
College Major:
 Economics

Helen Street was Class President in 9th Grade, served on Student Council for two years, and this year, she served as the school’s Student Council President. In her current role, she feels that she has helped shape the culture of the Honor Code at McGehee and guided others to do the same. She commented, “This has taught me valuable leadership, communication, and organizational skills which can be applied to many areas of life.”

Helen elaborated about her academic life. “McGehee's curriculum and teaching styles have given me the opportunity to learn many skills which will be useful both in college and after. McGehee's small class sizes have given teachers the ability to assign lots of writing assignments. This has allowed me to learn how to formulate arguments and write them in an essay. In a similar vein, many presentations and discussions have given me practice and confidence in public speaking. As well, opportunities to develop my own unique curriculum through online classes, electives, my mentorship, and extracurriculars such as Mock Trial has allowed me to learn about subjects that interest and engage me.” Her dedication to and work on the Mock Trial team taught her “valuable argumentation and writing skills, and also how to be a member of a collaborative team.”

Helen’s favorite McGehee tradition is the senior locker room, fondly referred to as “senior study.” She said, “ I love being able to spend time with my class during lunch and free periods. It is also very nice to have a space dedicated to you on campus. We have decorated the locker room with tapestries and other decorations to make it our own. Although it does get to be a mess in there at times, I still love the space and the people I spend time with there.”

Since Helen knew she wanted to attend college in the UK, she focused her efforts on the UCAS (the UK’s Universities and Colleges Admissions Service application), ultimately choosing St. Andrews as her college home for the next four years. She commented,  “I decided on St. Andrews because, beyond being located in a gorgeous Scottish town, everybody I spoke to loved it there. I was able to gather a lot of information about the student life at St. Andrews, and I could see myself fitting into the school's culture.”
