Medical Director of Infection Control, Ochsner Health

Kathy is a practicing Infectious Disease physician at Ochsner Health and her day to day work includes seeing patients, instituting measures to prevent infection, responding to current infectious diseases such as COVID-19, and keeping Ochsner caregivers safe from infections. She has been integral in leading and managing Ochsner Health’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Following her Infectious Disease fellowship from 1998 -2000 at Ochsner, Kathy was fortunate enough to stay in New Orleans at Ochsner. She has served as the Medical Director of Infection Control since 2008. Her prestigious career has been extremely challenging and rewarding and has enabled her to interact with many in our local community, caring for them as patients in the hospital or clinic. Several of her colleagues include fellow McGehee graduates outstanding physicians—Dr. Karen Busenlener Blessey ’87 and Dr. Dana Smetherman ‘82—who have earned her admiration and respect.

Dr. Baumgarten is also mother of alumna Ella Baumgarten ’20.

“The value of single sex education, the small classes, engaged teachers, and my motivated classmates were what made McGehee so unique and special. In this close, engaged environment I learned how to study and acquire knowledge, skills I use each and every day as I continue to learn from my family, patients, students and colleagues.”
