Middle School Financial Literacy “eSTEAMed” Speakers

Calling “eSTEAMed” Speakers!
Based on a proposal created by current 9th grade student, Katie Tober, the 8th grade STEAM students are investigating the principles of financial literacy and money management. Through an online stock-market simulator, the girls were given control of a hypothetical $25,000. While working through math-based activities the students calculated risk, investigated market trends, and learned to make informed budgetary decisions while being empowered to participate in the world of finance. These savvy students also had the opportunity to listen to experts from their community. McGehee Leading Women like Caroline Burlingame Eagan ‘07 (Underwriter at JPMorgan Chase) and Catherine Acomb ‘07 (Investment Associate at Bollinger Enterprises) presented on banking and investing through our eSTEAMed speaker series, a collaboration with the 8th grade service learning program. Several McGehee administrators/professionals also joined in as Financial Literacy educators, teaching the girls a lesson on wages, taxes and insurance. Director of Finance, Brittanee Baer, and Human Resources Manager, Dalenna Ponce, concluded the money management presentations.
