Girls & Sports

McGehee student athletes develop mentally and physically in an inclusive atmosphere of integrity and good sportsmanship. We offer a variety of sports to provide our girls the opportunity to choose a sport that they can contribute to and in which they can achieve success. Our goal in athletics is for our girls to push themselves to the limit, shape good character and experience growth on and off the field.

Faculty and coaches encourage each girl to meet her full physical, intellectual, moral, and social potential, while fostering self-esteem, inspiring high personal standards and addressing individual needs for each student athlete. At McGehee 82% of Middle School girls and 70% of Upper School girls participate in at least one sport.

According to statistics from the National Federation of High Schools, sports studies show that girls’ participation in sports offer a range of academic benefits. Young women who play sports tend to have higher grades and score higher on standardized tests than those who do not. A study done by the National Women’s Law Center supported that the lessons of teamwork, leadership and confidence that girls and women gain from participating in athletics can help them after graduation as well as during school. 82% of female business executives played sports, with a majority saying that lessons learned on the playing field contributed to their success.

Participation in school athletics can also have positive effects later in life according to research highlighted by the New York Times. Sports participation decreases a young woman’s chance of developing a range of diseases such as obesity, heart disease, osteoporosis, and breast cancer. High School athletes are less likely to smoke cigarettes or use drugs than their peers who don’t play sports.
