A briefing at the U.S. Department of State, thanks to McGehee alumna Saira Saaed ‘88, the Senior Advisor of the Arabian Regional Peninsula, was the perfect opportunity for our girls to observe a Foreign Affairs briefing. Evening dinner with DC alums at Cactus Cantina and several more historic monuments made for a very full and exciting day.

At McGehee, the junior class trip to Washington, DC is infinitely more than a sightseeing tour. The juniors have been immersed all year in the federal government, learning its role and intricacies and now they are front and center in the Nation’s Capital. They hit the ground running, taking in the National Archives, several monuments, a White House tour, a visit to the Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture and a visit to Capitol Hill to talk to Senator Cassidy about issues of importance to them. Add in evenings that include Comet Ping Pong and ice skating, the Class of 2025 is loving D.C.

Last week, Senior Estelle LeGardeur and Chemistry teacher Catherine Cresson attended the Americas Energy Summit at the Morial Convention Center. The summit, with attendees from over fifty countries, focused on energy security in the Americas. Estelle, keen on renewable fuel sources, was particularly excited about the Hydrogen Conference. Her year-long mentorship project now centers on making a clean hydrogen economy a reality in America. At the conference, she engaged with experts on various aspects of the hydrogen economy, addressing topics like hydrogen hubs, incentives, regulatory challenges, capital security, carbon capture, and decarbonization challenges. Estelle personally spoke personally with members of the hydrogen community, seeking answers to key questions for her mentorship. While her final presentation is scheduled for April at McGehee, she plans to further explore these questions next year at Duke, where she will major in energy.

Over in Upper School, Mr. Waddington discussed the legacy of Dr. King at last week's assembly, specifically addressing a passage on the Declaration of Independence, in what has become known as his "I Have a Dream" speech. As Mr. Waddington remarked on Wednesday, "As with any American holiday, this Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, which happens this year to fall on his birthday, offers us an opportunity to reflect upon what it means to be an American, the promise inherent in our most celebrated words and the obligation on each of us to strive to fulfill such promise as citizens and patriots."
Last Wednesday, to learn more about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., students in Kindergarten B watched a video called, “The Story of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by Kid President” and listened to Ms. Lemann read the book, Young Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “I Have A Dream” by Joanne Mattern, illustrated by Allan Eitzen. Thursday, the class watched a video of Yolanda King, 16 year old granddaughter of Martin Luther King, Jr. where she discussed a book she recently wrote and the continuation of her grandfather’s dreams. She also talked about what young people can do to dream and help the world. The girls then wrote an illustrated story about dreams they have to make the world a better place.
