Lower School

What sets McGehee apart from other schools is our in-depth understanding of how girls learn and succeed, combined with our mission to meet the needs of the individual girl.

Our multi-faceted curriculum, low student to teacher ratio and individual approach create an engaging learning environment. Our classrooms and hallways are cheerful and lively, filled with student artwork and projects, as well as the voices of our girls. The Lower School at McGehee is a place where girls love to learn, where girls thrive.

Every morning our students come through the doors eager to see what the day has to offer. Throughout the day, girls are actively involved in many learning opportunities to collaborate and learn through discussion and tinkering. Our curriculum is designed to foster creativity, problem solving, critical thinking, conversation, and self-esteem. Teachers create an environment where students develop confidence and feel safe, even while taking risks. To make sure they are always bringing the best tools to the classroom, our faculty attend professional development conferences around the country.

Girls’ schools are often cited for their academic excellence. In addition to academic excellence, it is the ability of girls’ schools to provide a communal experience in the supportive culture that gives the girls an edge later in life. Girls’ schools are the ideal setting for girls since they encourage academic excellence, support risk-taking, prepare girls for college and beyond, and foster a sense of leadership and self-development.

At McGehee, our mission is to provide a rigorous college-preparatory education for girls in an inclusive environment that fosters self-esteem, encourages high personal standards, addresses individual student needs and emphasizes active student participation in the learning process. The program uses traditional and innovative strategies to challenge students and to foster enthusiasm and a commitment to lifelong learning.

We live our mission every day.

Whitney Drennan, Lower School Head

I truly have the best job in the world. Every day I am met by enthusiastic, energetic girls who are eager to learn, make friends, tinker, build, read, write...to explore their world with the support and guidance of a faculty whose mission is to help each student reach her potential.
