Message from the Headmistress

Welcome to Louise S. McGehee School! For over a century now our school has graduated young women who know what it means to be Leading Women. Our girls are ready to take charge of their futures thanks to our small class sizes, academic rigor, experiential learning and our focus on the individual girl. At McGehee, we prepare each student for her unique journey amidst a climate of innovation rooted in tradition.

McGehee is an all girls’,  independent, college preparatory, non-sectarian school for girls in grades Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12. An incredible visionary, Louise S. McGehee, founded our school in 1912. Her mission was to build a college-preparatory school for young women that would focus on each girl and foster a lifelong love of learning – a gateway to success. We are a school of girls for girls. Our students understand that they can do anything because here girls fill every role – student body president, math whiz, sports star, lead in the play and valedictorian.

We have never wavered from that goal. Our extraordinary faculty respects the way girls learn and teaches with a curriculum that goes beyond the walls of the classroom. Each girl is encouraged to succeed by harnessing her potential, finding her voice, taking risks and delivering her best. Constantly improving and striving for excellence, our faculty, administration and staff and the Board of Trustees remain committed to ensuring McGehee is as unique and forward thinking as possible.

We are thrilled that you are visiting our website and hope you can gain a sense of our school. However, the spirit on campus is contagious, and I encourage you to experience it firsthand. We are small by design yet our accomplishments are big -- come tour our campus to learn more about McGehee Leading Women. Please call our Admission Office at 504-561-1224 to schedule a private tour of our school. We look forward to welcoming you and your daughter(s) to our beautiful Garden District campus.

Having spent a lifetime in education, I feel the best schools are those schools that support young women as they make their choices in the educational process. At McGehee, the individual girl is THE most important constituency of the school, and she is supported not just in a pedagogy that respects the ways girls learn but also in a curriculum that goes beyond the walls of the classroom.
