Letter From the Headmistress

Dear McGehee Family,
This has been an ambitious and most rewarding school year because of the completion of an extraordinary self-study and a wonderful accreditation visit by the ISAS. Additionally, as you all know we will be the site of the National Coalition of Girls' Schools (NCGS) Conference June 16-18. So, nothing has been quiet about this year even as it is quickly coming to a close.
As a result of the accreditation visit, in the coming year we will examine our scheduling, academic advising, further integration of technology and complete alignment of our curriculum mapping process. Leading the charge will be faculty member Debby Pigman who has also been named Academic Dean starting next year. Debby did an outstanding job with our self study and I know she will exceed my expectations once again.
Last night I had the pleasure of hearing Les Petites Chanteuses, Ensemble and the Concert Choir. Our girls' beautiful voices never cease to amaze me and of course we couldn't do any of this without our wonderful music faculty of Jessica Holl, Natalie True and Kevin Caparotta. I also want to commend our 4th grade class on their wonderful production of The 100 Year Snooze - it was fantastic.
Our Athletic Banquet honored all of our athletes and coaches. It was the best banquet I have attended since coming to McGehee. I watched the event with great pride and realized just how far our athletic department has come in the last 12 years. Over 85 Upper School girls and over 100 Middle School girls played at least one sport this year. This level of participation is phenomenal and certainly speaks to the strength and growth of our athletic department. We owe thanks to our fantastic group in the athletic department, Scott Western , Val Whitfield-Dunn, Sarah Skotty and Ashley Perschall, who also serves as full time personal trainer at school. And, we also owe thanks to our sensational parent coaches, Tim Harris (Golf), Michelle Baker (Tennis) and Guy Curry (Softball). As you have no doubt read on our website or in the newspaper, our McGehee teams competed very impressively. In Upper School, five of the nine teams we fielded finished in the top five in state competitions. I offer my congratulations to our faculty, coaches and girls! Keep on living the McGehee mission.
Our seniors are off campus now interning at a variety of venues such as The Times-Picayune, Children's Hospital, Criminal Court, interior design groups, schools, and more. The sophomore class honored their big sister class, the seniors, with a wonderful May Day celebration and congratulations to our May Day Queen Ellie Platt, First Maid Gaby Spangenberg and Second Maid Elenore Fisher. Senior college destinations include Tulane, Vanderbilt, Sewanee, Smith, Hamilton, Reed, the University of Georgia and many more. I know our girls have much to contribute to their colleges and universities - they certainly have been wonderful assets to McGehee. I am looking forward to honoring the Class of 2010 at graduation next Friday and we will honor each division at their final assemblies next week.
Have a wonderful, relaxing and safe summer.
Fondly,
Eileen Powers

Little Gate News
Dear Parents,
We have had a wonderful last month of the 2009-2010 school year. With the Elephant celebration tomorrow morning, our school year winds to a close.
April 28 brought one of our best Little Gate Jazz festivals ever - Little Gate students enjoyed dancing to Ingrid Lucia and others and Cornell Landry read his book, Happy Jazz Fest to the crowd. Parents and children enjoyed the meat pies, snow balls and watermelon, as well as great crafts, art and storytelling.
Thanks to Miss Paula, Little Gate students learned all about cycling. Miss Paula taught them about bike safety and they learned about Lance Armstrong and received one of his Live Strong bracelets. We had a fantastic trike-a-thon, and raised $2,400 to donate to St. Jude's.
We had a fantastic Teacher Appreciation week at Little Gate and thank you to all of our wonderful parents for all the special treats and help with carpool. We are grateful!
We have enjoyed many days of water play during the spring and our Little Gate campers will enjoy the same this summer, as well as, messy art, games and more. Camp dates are May 31-June 25.
Thank you for sharing your children with us! Have a wonderful summer! Best wishes.
