Middle School
Fifth through Eighth Grade - A Journey of Discovery
Middle School is a time of discovery, when girls truly begin to understand the power of their potential. Middle School is also a time of many changes, and the life of young girls can occasionally be tumultuous. McGehee's extraordinary faculty understands the unique challenges during these important developmental years and provides the curriculum, supportive environment and guidance to help each girl discover her individuality.
It is also a time to build upon fundamentals, and further encourage students to become responsible for their own learning experience. Our teachers encourage academic risks, and our students set high expectations for themselves.
The Service Learning Program at McGehee is a vital part of the Middle School experience. By integrating meaningful community service with classroom instruction and reflection, the program teaches civic responsibility and encourages lifelong civic engagement. The fifth grade program, entitled "Creative Young Conservationists Learning through Education and Service" (CYCLES) focuses on recycling and environmentalism. The sixth grade program, "Celebration Literacy: Rebuilding with Reading," funded by a grant from the Brown Foundation, involves students building literacy skills with second grade buddies from a local charter school. As part of their study of Life Science, seventh graders build a year-long relationship with residents from the local St. Anna's nursing home. "Because Reuniting Intensely Different Generations Enlivens Spirits" (BRIDGES) is also funded through the Brown Foundation. Through "Science Connections," eighth graders use their work in Environmental Science to mentor third grade buddies at a local charter school.
