Ceramics
Ceramics will provide the students with introductory information about the technique, vocabulary, aesthetics, history and concepts of non-mechanical and mechanical ceramic arts. We will work on the potters wheel as well as hand-building techniques. We will be using a low-fire clay body with low-fire glazes and slips. Projects will progress in complexity as the year progresses. Thinking, experimenting, generating, and developing ideas will be most valued. Hard work, attention to detail, and craftsmanship will be rewarded.
Required Tools
- Sketchbook
- Old fork, spoon, toothbrush, expired credit card are all handy tools
- Texture gadgets (anything and everything)
- Old towel
- Apron or old shirt so you can leave class the same way you came in.
Firing Work
We will be using electric kilns and firing them at low temperatures - 1940 degrees - which is cone 04.
Assignments
The students will be provided with a written description at the start of each assignment. There will be a class critique at about the same time the next assignment is due. You will be expected to thoughtfully present your completed work and discuss: what it is, why you did it and technically share how you made it.
Class Expectations
Come to class prepared. Assignments must be completed on time. On time means glazed, and thoughtfully presented. Showing a full understanding of the project at hand, asking thoughtful questions and giving constructive criticism are expected critique behavior. Individual effort must be made in studio maintenance and clean up. This means sometimes grabbing a broom or wiping the sink down. Twice during the year we will have class clean up.
Grading
Grades are formulated on technical proficiency, craftsmanship, creative interpretations and solutions, improvement during the year and completion of projects. Also attendance, class participation, sketches, and studio maintenance are paramount. Individual assignments will be recorded as: on time or late. On time means your work should be totally considered before a crit. If you are not ready in these ways it can significantly affect your assignment grade.
A-indicates exceptional work
B-Indicates above average work
C-Indicates a simple completion of a project
D & F-Indicate insufficient amount of work, excessive absences, slaking off on the class expectations and/or lack of growth in the studio.
Have a question? Ask. You can always email Ms. Villere or schedule an appointment outside of class time.
