McGehee Dramatics

McGehee's rich history of choral music helps create an environment where dramatic musical productions come naturally to our students.

Vibrant, quality and age-appropriate musicals are performed in Fourth and Eighth grades, as well as throughout Upper School. Whether it's Cinderella in Fourth Grade or Annie in Eighth grade, or Grease in Upper School, McGehee girls have many opportunities to learn the dramatic process from audition to rehearsal to show time! Competitive auditions are held for the lead roles, however, participation is highly encouraged so our no-cut policy makes sure that everyone who wants to be in a play has a place.

While there are many opportunities for McGehee girls to be in the spotlight on stage from PK through 12th grade, formal Drama Department offerings begin in Middle School. In 7th and 8th grades, the Drama Club meets during activity period once a rotation. The 8th grade play is a collaborative effort between the Music and Drama Departments and incorporated into the 8th grade curriculum. Everyone has a role and a chance to shine in the 8th grade play. Each year the Upper School puts on a musical production. Recent titles have include Sound of Music, Grease, Rent, and Into the Woods. The Upper School musical includes direction from the Upper School Music Director, a choreographer and the head of the Drama Department, and runs for three consecutive nights. In addition to the dramatic stage productions, McGehee's Drama Department offers Drama electives junior and senior year in Upper School, as well as mentorships for our seniors.

The goal of the Drama Department is to give the students confidence in themselves to make the written word come to life.
