Fine Arts
The Fine Arts are an integral part of the McGehee education. Throughout Lower School, opportunities abound for students to explore a variety of Fine Arts offerings, including visual art, both choral and instrumental music, and drama. Those traditions continue throughout Middle School and students begin to refine their Fine Arts choices as they enter Upper School. Additional Fine Arts electives and extra-curricular opportunities are offered in Upper School, including ceramics, photography, Concert Choir, Ensemble, A Cappella, Drama, and the annual Upper School musical.
At McGehee we strongly believe that music, art and drama are important subjects in our curriculum and important for the development of well-rounded students. The primary purpose of our program is to encourage confident, creative self-expression for our students in various art forms. Risk taking, invention and occasional failure are equally encouraged. High standards are held during each class and students enjoy our studio practice and significant musical experience. Technical skills are continually refined through the spiraling process of learning where students build on previous knowledge. The department believes that exposure to varied art experiences and opportunities for personal mastery are vital in the development of young artists.
Two units of Fine Arts in music, art and/or drama are required for graduation. Generally, students take a half credit of art each year, although full credit art and music is available for advanced students, as well as mentorships in senior year.
